At Big Easy Kitchens, we remodel kitchens across Hammond, the largest city in Tangipahoa Parish and the only place we work outside St. Tammany. A university city means a great deal of rental and investment property alongside family homes, and the two want very different things from a kitchen.
Free, detailed initial consultation. No obligation.
What we give you
Everything below comes with the job rather than as an upgrade. We work the same way on a rental near the university as on a house in the historic district.
We come to the property, measure, and put one fixed figure in writing.
A let and a family kitchen want different materials and different ironmongery. We ask which this is before specifying anything.
Our own plumbers and electricians. One crew and one calendar.
This is Tangipahoa Parish, not St. Tammany, so the forms differ. They are still ours to file.
Investment property turns over faster and gets used harder. We specify for that rather than for a photograph.
Terms that let the work happen this year. Phasing beats overselling.
Tell us whether this is your home or a rental and we will specify it accordingly.
Why homeowners call
Most calls start with one specific problem rather than a whole remodel. These are the ones we hear most in Hammond.
Surfaces and hardware that were never specified for the use they get.
Wanting the kitchen right before the next tenant or the next buyer.
Timber that has moved with decades of seasons.
Burns, chips, or a stain that no longer comes out.
A replacement that will not sit in the existing gap.
Sound cabinetry hidden under a colour from another decade.
An original kitchen that was never meant to be the centre of the home.
Worktops used as shelving because nothing else is free.
A slow leak that has swollen the base cabinets.
Recognise your problem on that list? We will tell you the shortest way to fix it.
What we do here
Not every Hammond kitchen needs gutting, and on a rental the smaller answer is often the smarter one. These are the jobs we are called out for most here.

Built to the openings an older downtown house actually has, in maple, oak, walnut or cherry.

Granite, quartz, laminate or timber, templated from your cabinets. On a let, quartz repays the difference within a couple of tenancies.

Fitting, repair, refacing and new doors. On investment property this is nearly always the better return.

A full reset between tenants without the void period a replacement would cost you.

Fitted storage sized to what genuinely gets kept there, whether that is a family pantry or a student cupboard.

Settling layout, materials and appliances in one go, specified for whoever is actually going to use the room.
Not sure which of these your property needs? We will tell you plainly at the estimate.
When to act
Most owners here wait longer than they need to, usually because the kitchen still functions. These are the three signals worth acting on.

If the kitchen needs patching every turnover, the specification is wrong rather than the tenants. Harder surfaces and better hardware pay for themselves quickly on a rental.

Doors that bind, hinges that sag, and edges swollen from years of humidity. If the boxes behind them are still square, this is a refinish rather than a rebuild.

A fridge that does not quite fit, then a range that does not match it, costs more over five years than planning the run once.
Built for Hammond homes
Hammond is a university town in a different parish from the rest of our service area, and both of those facts change a kitchen project here. Three things matter most.
Hammond sits in Tangipahoa Parish, so permitting runs through Tangipahoa rather than St. Tammany or Orleans. Same job, different paperwork, and we handle it.
A university city means a large share of the housing is let rather than owner occupied, and those kitchens need surfaces and hardware chosen for turnover.
The historic core has restored buildings and original housing where the kitchen was a back room by design. Opening those up is a different job from refitting a rental.
We plan around what Hammond property and Tangipahoa rules actually allow.
Working with a local team
A contractor who works this corridor regularly knows things an out-of-town outfit has to learn on your project. Four of those matter more than the rest.
Hammond sits on the Interstate 55 corridor we already work, so a job here is routine rather than a special trip.
We specify a let differently from a family kitchen, and we know Tangipahoa paperwork rather than guessing at it.
The person who measured the room is the person who answers when you ring about it.
Landlords here talk to each other. That is the only reference that has ever mattered to us.
How it works
Three stages on every Hammond job, whatever the scope turns out to be. You have the plan and the schedule before anything is torn out.

We measure, look at the structure and services, and ask whether this is your home or a let. Then a firm figure.

One approved set of drawings, finishes and appliances, with the Tangipahoa submission handled at our end.

Our licensed trades do the work and we go through the finished kitchen with you, list in hand.
Before you start
A few decisions settled early change what the rest of the budget can reach. These are the ones worth making before you call anyone.

Your own family and a tenant should not get the same specification. Say which at the start and the whole material list changes.

Hinges, runners and handles get used thousands of times a year. On a let, this is the cheapest durability money buys.

Bespoke joinery and special-order appliances set the calendar, and a void period costs you every week it runs.

The services we bring to Hammond property, and the areas we cover from the same crews. Each page goes into the detail this one summarises.

Installation, repair, refacing, and custom builds. The largest line in most Hammond remodels.

The fastest way to reset a kitchen between tenants without replacing the boxes.

Stone, quartz, and timber worktops, or a resurface that keeps the cabinets you have.

Where the layout gets settled before anything is ordered. Start here if a wall or the sink might move.

East across the parish line, covered by the same crews.

Every city we cover across Greater New Orleans and the surrounding parishes.
The area
Hammond is the largest city in Tangipahoa Parish, sitting roughly forty five miles north west of New Orleans and about the same distance east of Baton Rouge. It is home to Southeastern Louisiana University.
Southeastern Louisiana University is based here, which shapes the housing market as much as it shapes the town. A large share of the property near campus is let rather than owner occupied.
Hammond sits about forty five miles from both New Orleans and Baton Rouge, on the Interstate 55 corridor. That position is why it grew as a shipping point.
This is Tangipahoa Parish, not St. Tammany, so permitting and parish rules differ from the rest of our service area. We handle that as part of the job.
Around the neighbourhood
If you are new to the area, or weighing up a move within it, these are the places locals point visitors toward.
A walkable centre of restored buildings holding independent shops, galleries and restaurants. It is the part of the city residents send visitors to first.
Built by the Illinois Central Railroad in 1912 and renovated in 2008, the depot still serves passengers and now also houses the Chamber of Commerce.
The campus sits close to downtown and brings events, sport and a student population that keeps the city busy through the year.
A state plaque downtown marks Hammond as a strawberry capital, and the surrounding farms are still the reason people drive out here in spring.
Around Hammond
Hammond sits at the western edge of our service area, and we work east from here across the parishes.
East across the parish line into St. Tammany, the parish seat, with older wood-frame housing.
Further east in the piney woods, the smallest town we cover.
South east on the Tchefuncte, a river town with a boat-building past.
Worth knowing
A few things about the city that even long-time residents are sometimes surprised by.
A hardy variety developed in the 1890s let local farmers ship their crop across the country from downtown Hammond.
The Illinois Central Railroad built the station in 1912, and it was refurbished in 2008 with a raised platform.
Hammond is a stop on Amtrak’s daily City of New Orleans service, which runs between Chicago and New Orleans.
Hammond is the largest city in Tangipahoa Parish, which counted 133,157 residents at the 2020 census.
Getting around
Hammond is more connected than its size suggests, mostly because of the railway that built it. These are the options that actually serve the city.
The daily service between Chicago and New Orleans stops in Hammond, which makes reaching the city by rail genuinely practical.
The station sits on North West Railroad Avenue with parking and a ticket window, and doubles as the Chamber of Commerce.
Hammond sits directly on Interstate 55, roughly forty five minutes from both New Orleans and Baton Rouge by road.
Like most of the region, day to day travel here is by car, and we come to you for the estimate rather than the other way round.
Hammond questions answered
The questions Hammond owners ask us most before work starts. If yours is not below, call us and we will answer it straight.
We work in Hammond regularly. It sits on the Interstate 55 corridor and we cover it alongside the rest of our service area, using the same crews that build our New Orleans kitchens, so the standard and the schedule are identical.
Call us with your address and we will confirm you are inside the service zone before we book anything in.
Scope decides it, and here the authority is Tangipahoa Parish rather than St. Tammany or Orleans. The triggers are broadly familiar, but the office and the forms are not the same as the rest of our area, and on a let we also time the submission around the tenancy rather than around us.
We handle the submission, so the difference never becomes your problem.
Specify it for turnover rather than for a photograph, because a student let sees harder use than a family kitchen does. Quartz worktops, sprayed cabinet-grade finishes and soft-close hardware cost a little more once, and save you patching the same kitchen every time a tenancy comes to an end.
Tell us it is a rental at the estimate and the whole material list changes accordingly.
It is usually the best value work we do on an investment property in Hammond. If the carcasses are still sound, stripping the old finish back, repairing the damage underneath and spraying a fresh colour resets the whole kitchen for a fraction of what a replacement would cost.
It is also far quicker, which matters when the property is empty and earning nothing.
Days for a refinish or a worktop change, with the room broadly usable. Weeks for a full rebuild with relocated services, and on a let that void period is worth planning around carefully. We can work to a changeover date if you tell us when the property has to be back in use.
The dated schedule comes with the quote, so you can time it against a tenancy.
Yes, and it is some of the more satisfying work we do here. The approach is to keep the joinery and detail that give the house its character and rebuild the storage, lighting and services around them rather than stripping the room back.
We tell you what is worth saving before we quote replacing it.
Yes, our own licensed plumbing and electrical crews carry out that work on every Hammond job, whether it is a family home or a rental. Nothing is subcontracted out, which means one schedule to track, one point of contact, and nobody to chase when two trades need coordinating on site.
Free anywhere in Hammond, with no obligation. We come to the property, measure, look at the structure and services, and give you a fixed written figure rather than a range. Tell us it is an investment property and the recommendation changes accordingly.
